Built in tight
You notice it on the first properly warm day: the butter is soft, the freezer feels less crisp than usual, and the unit seems to run without a break. When both sides slip together like that, the fault is rarely inside the cabinet. It is usually the air around the condenser. A built-in that arrived during a remodel is often set snug into its opening, with trim or a toe board added afterward, and a grille that cannot breathe makes the compressor work longer and hotter for the same cold.
Sub-Zero names a dirty condenser as a reason a unit runs constantly or stops cooling, and its advice is a cleaning every six to twelve months, with no chemical cleaners or degreasers. It also warns that neglecting the condenser can end in mechanical failure. That is why we treat poor airflow as worth fixing early, before it turns into a compressor problem, the costly row at the bottom of the ledger.
When only the refrigerator side is struggling
A clean grille and a warm fresh-food side alongside a cold freezer tell a different story. Each side of a Sub-Zero combination built-in has its own compressor and cooling circuit, so the freezer’s good health points us to the refrigerator’s own evaporator fan: a motor at the end of its life, or a blade knocked out of position. It is a smaller job than anything in the sealed system.
