Sub-Zero Repair in Kenmore

Beyond the city line Lead appliance: Ice Maker

Kenmore wraps the northernmost shore of Lake Washington, its streets mostly laid out in the decades after the war, and the Sub-Zero its owners most often ask us about is the one that makes the ice.

Pattern Ledger

Kenmore: how it usually goes

Most often Water not reaching the ice maker

Gives itself away by Bin empty or down to a few cubes, no sound of filling, and a filter that was just swapped or is long overdue

Price band Ice maker, water valve or supply line$270–$750

Sometimes Fill tube frozen solid or a cube jammed in the mechanism

Gives itself away by A plug of ice where the water enters, or a cube wedged under the arm, with production stopping abruptly rather than tapering

Price band Ice maker, water valve or supply line$270–$750

Rarely Freezer too warm to freeze a batch

Gives itself away by The freezer display sitting above five degrees, food in the baskets softer than usual, and only thin cubes in the bin

Price band Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor$260–$690

Telling these three apart is what the $89 visit is for. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle · (206) 339-4211

Follow the water before blaming the ice maker

When the bin stays empty in a Kenmore kitchen, the ice maker itself is seldom what we replace. Sub-Zero’s own list starts upstream: whether the ice maker is switched on, whether the supply valve is open, whether the filter is properly seated, and whether an inline filter somewhere else in the house has run past its life. Sub-Zero’s service manual for the classic built-ins calls for household water pressure held constant somewhere from 20 to 100 PSI; a feed that falls short tends to show up first as small or hollow cubes, and only later as none. A fill tube that has frozen shut halts everything, and that usually sends us back to the valve that feeds it.

The frame shows where to look on an undercounter ice drawer: the white fill fitting above the bin, which is the first place a dry or frozen supply gives itself away.

Before you pick up the phone

Lift the bin and check that it goes back level and fully seated, and that the shut-off arm is down rather than raised. Ice needs a freezer holding 5°F or colder, and Sub-Zero recommends 0°F. It also allows 24 hours after the ice maker is switched back on, so a reset proves nothing until a full day has passed. The valve, the wiring and anything behind a panel are ours to open.

Getting to the kitchen

At booking, mention parking, any stairs between the street and the kitchen, and who will let the technician in. Tell us too whether the ice comes from a built-in’s freezer or a separate undercounter unit.

Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, starts with three things: the model number, the freezer’s reading, and whether water can be heard when a fill ought to be running.

What Seattle owners say

Built-in Sub-Zero calls in Queen Anne, Madison Park, Laurelhurst and Magnolia.

4.9/ 51,090 reviews

  • Condensation beading inside the glass door had me worried about the labels. The seal had shifted and the interior fan was turning slowly, so humid air settled instead of moving. Clear through a wet month.

    Soren E.Madison Park

  • No ice for ten days, and the reset in the manual did nothing. He ruled out the water line, then found the module seized and swapped it.

    Simone A.Queen Anne

  • The compressor never cycled off, loud enough to hear from the dining room. Condenser was packed with dust and the fan blade fouled. Cleaned, checked on gauges, and it rests between cycles again.
