Defrost parts come first
A freezer has to shed the frost that builds on its evaporator, and on the classic built-ins three parts share that job: the heater warms the coil, the terminator switches the heat off once the coil has cleared, and a warmed trough under it lets the meltwater drain. When any one of them quits, frost gathers cycle after cycle until the fan can no longer drive air through the coil. The freezer then warms slowly, the ice cream first, while its compressor keeps running and nothing looks wrong from the outside. Sub-Zero’s own guidance adds a useful line: when a freezer set at zero climbs past 10°F, a condenser cleaning on its own seldom rescues it, so at that point we look past the condenser.
A freezer kept outside the kitchen
A spare freezer in a garage, a basement or a back porch is a different case. Sub-Zero builds its indoor units for rooms between 60 and 90°F and says that outside that range no repair will set the performance right; where a room can drop to freezing, it advises winterizing, because frozen water can damage the supply line or the water valve. Two settings worth a look
On electronic panels the factory freezer setting is zero, so check nothing has nudged it upward. And if the unit has a Sabbath mode, see whether it is on: it switches off the ice maker and the door alarm, so a drawer that did not quite close stays quiet.
