Where the freezer stands matters
Before anything is tested, we ask where the freezer lives. Sub-Zero rates its indoor models for surroundings of 60°F to 90°F, and it states that when the room sits outside that range, no repair can correct the problem until the temperature is back inside it. A cabinet in a garage or a shop can behave perfectly through spring and start failing with the first cold snap. The manufacturer also warns that the mechanical and electrical parts of indoor units are not rated for freezing temperatures even when switched off. For a unit left in an unheated space, its winterizing guidance has the cabinet turned off, doors open and the interior dried, and on ice-maker models the water line drained rather than simply shut off.
Frost, then warmth
Where the room is fine, the freezer’s own defrost system is our first suspect. On Sub-Zero’s classic built-ins the freezer compartment is the one carrying the defrost heater, the defrost terminator and a heated drain trough. When one fails, frost builds over the coil until air stops passing and the compartment warms. Sub-Zero also lists a door left ajar, a torn gasket, an ice-blocked drain tube and a poorly filling ice maker among the reasons frost piles up. Soft ice cream alone, it notes, does not prove the freezer is warm, so put a thermometer in before deciding. The recommended setting is 0°F.
