Two appliances sharing a wall
Sub-Zero builds its combination built-ins with a separate compressor and evaporator for each compartment, and a pair of columns is simply two appliances standing side by side. That separation is why one half can fail quietly while the other hums along, and why a healthy freezer is no reassurance about the refrigerator next to it. The useful question is which half, and since when.
The freezer half
On the 600-series built-ins, defrost belongs to the freezer side. A heater warms the freezer coil at intervals to clear its frost, a heated drain trough carries the melt water away, and a terminator cuts the heater once the coil is warm enough, ending that cycle. When one of those fails, frost packs the coil until the fan can no longer push air through it, and the freezer softens gradually rather than all at once. What it needs is the failed part replaced and the coil cleared of ice; the compressor has usually done nothing wrong.
The refrigerator half
The fresh-food half fails differently. Its trouble is nearly always about air: a fan motor at the end of its life, the door-pressed switch that starts it, or a gasket letting in enough damp kitchen air to ice the coil.
