Which column, first of all
A refrigerator column and a freezer column fitted side by side read as one piece of furniture, yet each is a complete appliance with its own compressor, coil, fan and controls. That is the fact behind most Windermere calls. The column still holding its temperature says almost nothing about the one that is not, so the first thing we ask is which of the two has changed, and how quickly.
Where each column tends to go wrong
In the refrigerator column the pattern is moving air and a closing door. A fan that has stopped lets the compartment creep up while the panel still looks calm, and a door kept a fraction open, by a platter standing proud of a shelf or a hinge that has settled, does the same thing more slowly.
In the freezer column the pattern is frost. A frost-free freezer warms its coil with a heater from time to time to clear it, and Sub-Zero lists a failed defrost element, a torn gasket and a door left ajar among the causes of frost build-up. Once the coil is choked, cold air stops passing through it and the freezer softens even though its compressor keeps running. The cure is the failed part and a full thaw of the coil, not new refrigeration.
When both columns warm together
Two separate appliances seldom fail together. When both drift up at once, look first at what they share: the room, since Sub-Zero builds its indoor units for spaces between 60°F and 90°F, and the power feeding them. Tell us on the phone that both changed; it moves the starting point.
