What the spill is telling us
Ice heaped on one side of the ice maker, with a cube lodged in its works, points to a cycle that jammed partway, so the next fill landed on a full mold. Icicles that keep growing while the ice maker rests point to a valve that no longer closes completely when its power drops away, as the service manual expects it to. A solid fill tube with spilled ice around its end suggests the supply sagged and the tube froze.
Why level and position matter
The fill cup has to sit clear of the ice path and the ice maker has to hang level, or water runs to one end of the mold and over the edge. Both can shift when a bin is forced back in or ice is chipped away with a tool.
Ice on the freezer floor with nothing around the ice maker usually comes from the defrost drain instead.

Is a little water around a built-in ice maker normal?
Not inside the freezer. Each fill should land in the mold and freeze there, so icicles, frozen puddles or a glazed shelf mean water is escaping. An undercounter ice machine is a different design: Sub-Zero says water spraying and dripping inside its ice-making assembly is part of normal operation.
