Timer, switch or neither
A light that goes out mid-shop and a light that never goes out are opposite faults, and telling them apart costs nothing. The first is usually the terminator doing exactly what it was fitted to do: interior lamps get hot, so the control cuts them after a long opening and brings them back once the door has been shut a while. The cabinet stays cold throughout, which is the reassurance.
The second is the one to act on. A door that no longer tells the cabinet it has closed leaves the lamp burning unseen, and a lamp burning inside a closed compartment is a small heater running all day. It shows up as a compartment that has quietly drifted a few degrees rather than as anything dramatic.
What the visit covers
The tab on the door that presses the switch is looked at first, because it is plastic, it takes a knock every time the door swings, and it is cheap to put right. Then the switch itself and its wiring, and last how warm the compartment has actually been running, measured rather than guessed. If the lamps turn out to be a lockout and not a fault, that is said plainly and nothing is sold.
What you can check safely
- Close the door and leave it shut for 45 minutes, which is how long Sub-Zero says the lights can stay off on 500, 600 and 700 series units and the IC-27.
- With the door open, look for the tab on the door that should press the light switch, and say whether it is bent, cracked or missing when you ring.

Why did my Sub-Zero lights turn off while the door was open?
Interior lights get very hot when left on, so Sub-Zero fits a light terminator that cuts them after a long opening. On older Classic BI units that happens after about 15 minutes, and the lights stay off for 45 minutes once the door closes. Designer models dim instead of going dark.
Is a light that stays on with the door shut a problem?

Can I bring the lights back without waiting?
